As a new graduate I joined the Chemistry Research department of Glaxo Group Research, with the thought that after a couple of years or so I might move on to see the world. In the event I spent all my working life (almost 41 years) with Glaxo and its successor companies GlaxoWellcome and GlaxoSmithKline, but still managed to see much of the world, through either holidays or business trips. Interesting, enjoyable and stimulating times indeed.

From Chemistry I moved on into Patents and then Patent Litigation, seeking to defend Glaxo’s patent property on particularly their anti-ulcer drug Zantac in the USA and a variety of other countries.

After retiring in June 2007 I moved to Cambridge where I enjoy a very full life including membership of my church and of a choir, taking piano lessons, volunteering at the Scott Polar Museum, walking with Ramblers, cross-country skiing and being a trustee of a residence for overseas graduates, as well as keeping up with family and many friends, and endeavouring to maintain my house and garden.

I have been fortunate enough to holiday in all seven continents including the Arctic in 2012 and the Antarctic in 2014. The two photographs were taken on one of the islands of the Antarctic Peninsula, and among King Penguins on South Georgia.
