Roger Manners, son of Prof. D.J. Manners of the Heriot-Watt University, obtained his licence while at school. The author remembers Roger being brought by his father to the stand of the Lothians Radio Society at the Edinburgh Hobbies Exhibition and hopes that this had the desired effect! Along with his friends Robert Dalgleish GM3ZVB and Ed Bain GM4AIS he was very active in portable VHF operation and they all operated a UK tour with their well-equipped van using the special callsign GB3GWC. (See separate item under Photographs on this website.
After university, Roger joined Racal Electronics plc, famous for the RA-17 communications receiver.
Tragically, Roger died in a car accident in his early 20s.
